This isn't a mosaic in the usual flat sense. The designers layered tiles and plates both vertically and horizontally to build an actual textured surface, so the pond has depth you can feel with your hand as well as see. Across 3,179 pieces you're placing a diagonal stroke of light that runs from top right down to bottom left, and more lilies on the right than the left, because Monet never made anything symmetrical. Step back across the room and the whole thing stops reading as bricks and starts reading as 1899.
